About the Assignment

Eldorado Springs Resort has been drawing people to the base of the Rocky Mountains since 1905 — once nicknamed "The Coney Island of the West," it welcomed presidents, big-band legends, and generations of Colorado swimmers. This summer, after a five-year renovation, its historic pool reopened. Boulder Lifestyle Magazine sent me out to capture it.

What made this shoot especially fun: I brought both my digital camera and a pack of Polaroid film. The article spans past and present — old black-and-white photos of divers and swimmers alongside the freshly renovated pool deck, the 1920s ballroom, and the canyon backdrop that hasn't changed in a century. Shooting on Polaroid felt like the right way to honor that. There's something about instant film at a place that old that just clicks.

The Story

Writer Linden Butrym covers the resort's history and the careful renovation — new filters, heaters, an expanded snack bar, ADA accessibility — all while preserving the Spanish Mission architecture and the natural spring water the pool is famous with. (The spring water is apparently 6,000 years old and won a gold medal at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Convention this year, which is not something I expected to learn on a pool shoot.)
